My intellectual passion is in people fighting for their freedom and right to govern themselves. I've written on democracy and authoritarianism, constitutional systems and national legislatures, and religion and politics. I studied international relations, economics and history at Cornell and the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies before receiving my Ph.D. in political science from Stanford. In addition to UC Berkeley, I have taught at the University of Pennsylvania and universities in Russia, Poland, China, and Indonesia.
