Democracy Hawks defend and empower democracy worldwide. We understand that robust economies, liberalizing social attitudes, and progressive policies may not be enough to quell the threats to liberal democracy that have grown increasingly urgent in recent years.

In order to reinvigorate the spirit of democracy, we must stand up to authoritarian bullies and attack them relentlessly on multiple fronts. Success depends on confronting our own biases and rethinking our approach to the political battles we face.

Democracy Hawks was founded in 2022 by a group of students and their professor at the University of California at Berkeley. We tell the story of democracy’s promise for advancing equality and freedom, develop research-based strategies to defeat autocracy, and build a robust community of individuals and organizations working together to defend democracy.
